Unreal Tournament 3 - Map
Factoria is an Unreal Tournament 3 map created for a 2nd year Level Design exercise.
The goal was to design a 4v4 capture the flag map that allows 3 playstyles (short, mid, and long range).
This is a symmetric map which is based on the jump and the wall-ride mechanics, in one word : "The Mobility".
You'll see through this page the different iterations I made on the map to go from the concept / pappermap to the final map...

First draft : Papermap

The main intention on this pappermap was to create 3 types of areas :
-
One at the middle for the long-range playstyle
-
Two next to the middle for the mid-range playstyle
-
Two on the sides for the short-range playstyle

To make the wall-ride and the jump mechanics interesting for the players, I designed high platforms that allows them to go faster from one point to another by using these mechanics.

I also put interesting items & weapons on the high-grounds to encourage the players to play on them.
First Build

Problems
After few playtests, I listed several problems :
- The map was too big
- Too much long-range
- Useless areas
- Not interesting wall-rides

Rework
To solve the previous problems, I firstly re-sized the map and remove the floor at the middle to create holes.

I also put better items on the walls (like shields) to make the wall-rides more interesting, but more challenging due to the holes.

Finally, I created tunnels that allows the players to play short-range and go from their sides to the center of the map without being spotted by snipers.
